Betsy DeVos: Pioneer for Education

Betsy Devos, an activist, and businesswoman has been elected to serve as the country’s eleventh Secretary of Education. She was nominated by President Trump and has served as part of his administration since early 2017. Devos, known for support of school vouchers offering a stronger school choice, has also supported charities such as the Education Freedom Fund and the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts. Along with her husband, Dick DeVos, she has a strong background in business and entrepreneurship.Mrs. DeVos believes that opportunities such as private and charter schools will give families a more comprehensive choice for schooling. She has served on such organizations such as the Foundation for Excellence in Education; Alliance for School Choice and All Children Matter PAC. She has also been a strong supporter of the Detroit Charter School System.

Before accepting her current post as Education of Secretary, Mrs. Devos was the Chairwoman of the Republican Party in Michigan, as well as a committee member on the National Republican Party. Her interest in politics dates back many years as she helped to nominate President Bush in 2000.After being appointed by President George W. Bush to the board of directors of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in 2004-Mrs. DeVos served until 2010. As she sat on this board, she and her husband developed a program to teach management how to fundraise and allocate monies for the Center. The DeVos donated over 22 million dollars to enhance this program and the Kennedy Center.

DeVos also served as chairperson and member of the Acton Institute. She has also lent support to such groups as Traditional Values; Center for Individual Rights; Institute for Justice; Center for Individual Rights; Michigan’s Pregnancy Resource Center; Right to Life Michigan Educational Fund; and Baptists for Life.[109]The DeVoses have also created an annual scholarship, called the Betsy and Dick DeVos Scholars for Free Enterprise and Entrepreneurship Scholarship, which is given to students obtaining a Bachelors Degree or higher at Northwood University.[143]The DeVos Foundation has been a force since 1989, donating money to schools., hospitals, and the arts. The Foundation is dedicated to promoting quality education and care for today’s world. Mrs. DeVos and her husband donated $11.2 million dollars in 2015. Betsy DeVos is a pioneer in the world of women making a difference for society.
